Karen Birkin (b. 1974, UK)

Courtauld Institute, BA History of Art, 1995

After my degree I worked briefly in the film world for a few years and then I worked as a picture restorer, restoring Dutch oil paintings from 15th and 16th Century in a studio in Chelsea, London.  In my spare time I went to classes to learn about traditional painting techniques and icon painting in egg tempera.

Over the years I have exhibited regularly at the annual Law Society Art Group exhibition, held in the Law Society in Chancery Lane, London and have won the following prizes:

First Prize 2004: ‘Self portrait’

First Prize 2008: ‘Andrew and Poppy'

First Prize 2009: ‘Dora'

First Prize 2012: ‘Huts'

First Prize 2015: 'Irish Sea' and  'Carnan Peninsula’

Highly Commended 2014: 'Morfa Nefyn'

In 2008 “Andrew and Poppy” was exhibited in the Welsh Artist of the Year exhibition at St David’s Hall, Cardiff.

In 2003 I moved to the LLyn peninsula and started a fine art degree at Coleg Menai in 2006.  In the same year I helped create an arts education programme in the Nairobi slums for the charity Anno’s Africa (http://www.annosafrica.org.uk).  I helped curate an exhibition of the children’s work in London in 2007.

I was unable to finish my degree at Coleg Menai because I started a family, but I continue to paint and juggle motherhood commitments.
